熱帯雨林の生態系を知ろう

ケアンズ周辺の熱帯雨林は生物の宝庫。3000種類以上の植物、400種類以上の鳥類、100種類以上の哺乳類が生息しています。そして、ここに生息するその多く種が地球上の他の地域では見ることができません。

美しい水鳥たちはケアンズ中心部のエスプラネードで観察できます。より多くの鳥に会うならデインツリーにたくさんあるハイキングコースがオススメです。オウゴンニワシドリやキンショウジョウインコなど、たくさんのカラフルな鳥が観察できるはずです。

ケアンズの動物園は動物達に近づけるのが特徴で、カンガルーやコアラに餌付けをしたり、一緒に写真がとれたりと、とても近い距離で動物たちを楽しんでいただけます。キュランダ・コアラガーデン、レインフォレステーション・ネイチャーパーク、ハートリースアドベンチャー、ワイルドライフハビタット、そして市内中心部にあるワイルドライフドームなどでオーストラリアのユニークで可愛い動物達に触れ合うことができます。

ノースクイーンズランドで古代から生き続ける代表的な動物といえば、クロコダイル（イリエワニ）とカソワリィ（ヒクイドリ）です。この２種は恐竜時代からの生き残り！野生のカソワリィに出逢える可能性が高いのは、イニスフェイル南のエティベイ（ここではビーチに現れることが多い）といわれる場所や、ミッションビーチ周辺の熱帯雨林、キュランダ、ケープトリビュレーションです。早朝と午後の遅い時間は出逢える可能性が高いようです。もし、簡単にクロコダイルを見るなら、動物園が一番ですね。また、デインツリーやミッションビーチで野生のクロコダイルを探すジャングルクルーズツアーもあるので参加してみるのもいいかもしれませんね。
